It need only be one paragraph... There was and is non-existant Corporation Tax, which lead to an influx of foreign corporations, whose wage bills paid for an explosion in people's disposable income, which then fed rampant consumerism.
This growth reached a natural end but has since been sustained and masked by a subsequent construction boom, sustained by people's obsession with home ownership and investors' obsession with commercial property.
