Winds of Change

Looks as though Syria is going to bow to international pressure and pull out of Lebanon altogether. Some people, such as Ed Kilgore of the Democratic Leadership Council, feel this has nothing to do with US policy, even though US policy in the Middle East since 9/11 has been directed preciselt in this direction. Here's a piece http://http://www.timesonline.co.uk/newspaper/0,,176-1512403,00.html explaining just why the US isn't trumpeting its role in the growth of freedom in the region; to do so would jepordise the phenomenon.

Despite their reticence, it is hard to believe that Syria would be pulling out of Lebanon, with the consequent damage to its morale and strategic position, without the US presence in Iraq. It's also hard to believe that W's commitment to democracy in the region and Egypt's newfound enthusiasm for contested elections are entirely unrelated. We will continue to watch developments with interest.
